Project L.I.K.E: Book their dreams!

PROJECT: LIKE (Learn, Inspire, Know, Educate) is our humble attempt at finding ways to offer a helping hand to those engaged in social and community work focusing on children’s formal and non-formal education in India. We are deeply inspired by the value of dedicated service and through PROJECT: L.I.K.E. we wish to be a positive contributor in their efforts to inspire children to learn, know and grow to become responsible citizens of India and the World.

Project L.I.K.E. is founded on our belief that knowledge is the key to success in this age. Through this project we hope to give the children, our primary beneficiaries - confidence, knowledge and exposure to the beauty of the world outside of their own.

Supporting non-formal educational programs in India

Through three different efforts we are supporting the ongoing work of Seva Mandir, an organization that has its head office at Udaipur City, Rajasthan and is currently working in 583 villages in Udaipur and Rajsamond districts. Our collaboration with Seva Mandir is limited to supporting its educational programs.

Last year, a donation was made to purchase the necessary educational supplies and winter clothing for children attending learning camps. We also selected, purchased and shipped more than 120 books in Hindi. For a detailed report of last year’s efforts, click here: L.I.K.E.

Bikes for Girls

Literacy alone is not sufficient to empower women. They must learn to be self-reliant, independent and self-confident. One small step in this direction is to be able to move from place to place without constraints. Unlike cities, rural India is often not well connected with local bus services. Bicycles are the cheapest way for the women to travel in the rural areas.

In light of our larger objective to help girls and women become independent, and in consultation with Seva Mandir this year our support will involve donating money for purchasing bicycles for girls and women attending non-formal educational programs. We are currently raising funds for “Bikes for Girls.”

Chennai Reading Room

Another dream of Project L.I.K.E. is to establish grassroots reading rooms in India where books can be visited again and again by a larger number of children and adults. We believe that exposure to information should not be limited by age, gender or economic capabilities of the parents.

At this time we plan to set up one Reading Room in India at: Chennai, Tamilnadu. We will include more locations in the future.

Since children are taught in regional Indian languages, providing them with locally relevant material in their language is an important aspect of the program. The majority of the regional language books will be bought in India. We welcome cash contributions in any amount for purchasing books, and for staffing and maintaining this reading room.

Neil Public Library in Pullman, WA has donated gently used children’s magazines for reading room in Chennai. We are currently also seeking sponsorship to ship these books. If you are interesting in sponsoring this, please contact us at serenelight_us@yahoo.com

Donations can also be made in the name of a special woman family member or friend. All cash donations are tax-exempt in US and India.

Small steps can make a difference

We believe that by giving a helping hand in nurturing the dreams of even a single child we are helping in nation building.

Please pass on this information to anyone - Individuals, Groups, Companies, Organizations - who might be interested in contributing to this cause.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
